Information Architecture

Melitta Drops could only be attractive if they were integrated into an ecosystem in which all components worked hand in hand.

Customer Journey

Throughout the process, we also designed a customer journey, where the customer first learns about the product and ends up creating his/her own individual coffee drop.

Smart Ecosystem

In the meantime, Melitta Drops were integrated into the Melitta ecosystem. Various product-related data points are stored in Melitta Cloud. These include not only classic personal data, but also data regarding the customer's taste and food preferences. The data could then be used for individualised advertising. For instance, the location of drop users in metropolitan areas could be used for targeted marketing campaigns. In the long run, the data could be analysed to come up with new product concepts.

Design of the App

In the app design, we focused on building essential flows and key features that would constitute a decent prototype.

My Cart & Check-out

Users can drag their configured drops to the cart and place the order easily. They can also set selected flavours as subscriptions to get them regularly without manually repurchasing.

Design System

To create a fresh appearance of Melitta as a brand, we used various shades of mint green in combination with coffee brown instead of Melitta's iconic red.

Key Feature

Generate your own drops. Users can generate their own drops by configuring 5 components within few clicks: coffee beans, flavour, milk, sweet and benefit.

Melitta Drops

2016

Known for its iconic filter coffee, Melitta had been struggling with weakening customer perception. In this context, they launched an innovation project at our university to seek fresh ideas that could enhance their product offering. We aimed to develop a design solution that would combine new coffee products with an app. This would make the products more appealing to younger target groups and digitally more accessible.

Goals & Challenges

Understand customers' motivation and expectations for coffee drinking.

Develop a design solution that would conform

to the trend, meet the needs of customers and refresh the brand image for Melitta.

Identify key features of the app that would influence coffee drinking habits.

Background

We found that 20% of German coffee consumption takes place via pads or capsules. In addition, mixed coffee beverages, e.g., offered by Starbucks, are highly appealing to younger target groups.

7 milestones throughout the process

The future of coffee consumption does not lie in packaged capsules, but in the various taste preferences of the younger generation, who are also keen to configure their own individual products. That's how the coffee drops were born. Our drops are a new co-design solution requiring fewer steps to prepare the coffee.

About the Project

Role & Learnings

My Role

As project lead, I worked together with Bachelor students from product design and UX design. Apart from creating the app, I was responsible for the project plan and organisation.

Learnings

It was my first project as lead and I worked in an interdisciplinary team. Throughout the process, it's critical to bring all team members to the same page and let them share the same understanding in terms of goals and approach. In the meantime, I learned how to manage the time plan wisely and delegate tasks to team members.
